ADA Ramp Slope Guidelines Overview

Under the ADA Accessibility Standards (Section 405), any walking surface with a running slope steeper than 1:20 (5% slope or 2.86°) is legally classified as a ramp. The maximum permitted slope for commercial ADA compliance is 1:12 (8.33% slope or 4.76°).

Slopes steeper than 4.76° are difficult and dangerous for manual wheelchair users to ascend, and present tipping risks on descent.

Mathematical Formulas: Ratio to Angle Conversion

To convert any ramp ratio (Rise : Run) into exact slope degrees (θ), use the inverse tangent (arctangent) function:

Example: For a 1:12 slope → arctan(1 / 12) = arctan(0.08333) = 4.76°

Slope Percentage = (Rise / Run) × 100 = (1 / 12) × 100 = 8.33%

How to Verify Existing Ramp Slope from a Photo

If you are evaluating an existing ramp on site and don't have a 4-foot digital smart level, you can verify compliance using our digital protractor:

  1. Take a True Side-Profile Photo: Stand perpendicular (90°) to the side of the ramp from 10 to 15 feet away. Keep your camera level with the midpoint of the incline to avoid perspective distortion.
  2. Upload or Paste Photo: Open the Online Protractor and upload your photo.
  3. Set Ground Level Reference: Drag Ray A horizontally along the level ground or sidewalk base.
  4. Align Incline Ray: Drag Ray B along the ramp walking surface.
  5. Verify Compliance: If the measured angle is ≤ 4.8°, the ramp complies with the 1:12 ADA maximum standard.
